The Secret Hack You Can’t Afford to Ignore: Radon Testing
4 minute readWe’re about to let you in on a secret: To create the ultimate Healthy Home environment, you must pay attention to the state of your Indoor Air Quality! Caring about the air inside your home means focusing on more than just temperature control, humidity levels, and high concentrations of airborne pollutants. Radon testing can help you stay aware of potential underlying dangers to your air, home, and health.
What Is Radon?
Radon is an odorless, colorless gas that can enter your home through cracks in the foundation. As the #1 cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers, radon gas can pose a huge threat to our health.
Think back: When you first bought your home, it’s possible your home inspector most likely conducted some level of radon testing, but how do those results hold up long-term? Previous radon testing aside, over 30 states across our nation have reported higher-than-average radon levels. To make matters worse, it’s estimated that elevated radon levels can be found in 1 in every 15 homes!
With radon so prevalent in homes across the country, coupled with all the negative health impacts it creates, it’s no secret that radon testing and control should be a priority for homeowners everywhere. No matter where you live, it’s important to conduct radon testing once per year.
Is It Time to Look into Radon Testing?
If you’re buying or selling a home, state laws may require a home inspector to conduct radon testing, and even if not required, radon should still be a top concern to look into before initiating any real estate transactions.
While moving may not be a current consideration, radon testing should be on your mind as you work toward a Healthy Home environment for your family! In fact, the EPA recommends annual radon testing—even if you don’t presently or have never had an active radon system in your home.
We here at AprilAire agree: Radon testing should be part of your yearly home maintenance routine no matter where you live. That’s why we make radon testing and mitigation easy and accessible to all.

For the DIY Homeowner
The AprilAire Short-Term Radon Test Kit makes it easy for everyone to conduct radon testing at home! To check your levels, follow these detailed instructions:
- First, find a place at breathing level in the lowest livable level of your home. Look for a spot that’s away from drafts and heat sources.
- Once you’ve secured your testing spot, open and hang the test kit in your home for 3–7 days. The longer you display the kit in your home, the more accurate your results will be!
- After 7 days of exposure, mail your test kit back to us here at AprilAire. We will then analyze your test and email the results back to you directly.

Breaking Down Your Radon Testing Results
Your radon testing results are in . . . but what do they mean? Here’s everything you need to know about your findings!
Radon’s Unit of Measure
Radon levels inside the home are typically measured using a unit called pCi/L, or picocuries per liter of air. A picocurie is used to define the rate of radioactivity decay of radon. For scale, a picocurie is almost six times smaller than the thickness of a human hair.
Assessing Your Home’s pCi/L
Because there is no known safe level of exposure to radon, it’s important to take immediate action when your radon levels read 4 pCi/L or above. That said, even if your home is reading levels between 2 and 4 pCi/L, the EPA recommends taking action to reduce your levels through mitigation.
Radon Mitigation System Cost and Install
How should you proceed if you find your home’s radon levels are elevated? Installing a radon mitigation system is highly recommended.
These systems, or fans, connect to piping installed in your foundation to exhaust radon gas out of the ground under and around your home to prevent it from entering and accumulating.
Your local AprilAire Radon Control Professional is certified to install safe and effective mitigation solutions in your Healthy Home! They can give you insight into radon solutions, including average radon mitigation system cost based on your home’s radon levels, square footage, the number of fans needed—along with where they need to be placed to mitigate—and more.
